THE WOMEN’S WORDS COLLECTION

Drawing on psychoanalytic & feminist theory I look at the way language is used to form identity & position women in western society.

My ‘women’s words’ are represented by the figure zero, a figure which at once represents a nothing, a lack -as Lacan so famously said ‘the woman does not exist’-a gap, the absence of maleness, & therefore, a lesser being.

But zero forms the basis of binary code on which society functions. Zero is an intensifier, increasing the value of any number it is placed next to. Zero is a cipher. Theory can challenge-if woman does not exist as a categorical subject, then woman can be every subject she chooses.

The pieces in this collection are playing with words, disrupting punctuation, punching out new configurations, calling for shifts.
